Expertise

Richard has significant experience in Dutch and international tax planning structures, particularly advising clients on international tax structures involving multiple jurisdictions, covering the Americas, Europe and Asia. Richard has wide-ranging experience on cross-border mergers and acquisitions and regularly teams up with tax directors and/or general counsels of large enterprises to achieve clients’ needs on taxation, efficiency and harmonization goals.

In addition, Richard has focused and continues to focus his career on acting as strategic tax counsel to large privately and/or family owned enterprises in the Americas and Africa. Richard with his tax team has been closely involved with WLP-law’s legal team in both national and international tax planning structures, mergers and acquisitions, transfer pricing, EU tax law, real-estate and tax litigation.

Richard also regularly advises and so acts as trusted overall tax counsel to numerous national and multi-national enterprises, and high net worth individuals with a focus on clients from the United States of America, United Kingdom and Latin America.

Career

Richard spent almost 10 years at one of the ‘big four’ accounting firms, including a two-year term in London, joining its Dutch desk as a tax associate focusing on cross-border complex tax structuring. Upon his return to the Netherlands, Richard joined a U.S. internationally operating law firm in its Amsterdam office, and quickly became one of the leading international tax partners of the firm.  In 2011, Richard decided to co-found WLP-Law and set up the international tax practice as boutique firm.

Education

Member NOB (Dutch Association of Tax Lawyers) since 1994. Education: Master of Law (both tax and notarial) from Groningen University, 1994. Post doc: European Fiscal Studies at Erasmus University Rotterdam, 1996.  During his career, Richard has published numerous articles during on Dutch corporate tax, EU tax developments, tax treaties and transfer pricing.

Richard is fluent in English, Dutch and speaks proficient Spanish.
